The Best Hiking Trainers for Summer

Hiking trainers have moved firmly into the fashion mainstream over the past few years. Salomon and Arc'teryx are now as likely to be seen on the high street as they are on the trail.  And while they’ve never looked better, they don’t always perform that way.  But when you’re choosing a pair you actually intend to walk in, the technical side matters most.  These are the ones that do both.

1. Adidas Terrex Free Hiker 2.0 w. Gore Tex, £165

A strong all-rounder, especially if you’re used to a trainer. The ‘boost’ midsole gives it a softer, more cushioned feel than most hiking shoes, which makes a difference over longer distances. Still structured enough to handle uneven ground without feeling heavy or overbuilt.

2. ROA Sella, £215 (currently on sale for £108)

More directional, but properly built. Lightweight, precise, and finished with a Vibram sole, so it holds up where it matters. One of the few pairs that genuinely balance design with performance.

3. Salomon Elixir Activ w. Gore Tex £130

A more refined take from Salomon. Lightweight, stable, and built for mixed terrain, with a cleaner silhouette than some of their more recognisable styles. Reliable over distance without feeling overly technical.

4. Norda 001A, £260.

Technically a trail runner, but absolutely worth including. Made with Dyneema, an ultra-lightweight fibre that’s exceptionally strong, so it holds up well over distance without adding weight. Better suited to drier conditions, but very comfortable over distance and easy to wear across a full weekend.

5. Merrel Moab Speed 2 w.Gore Tex, £150

A lighter, faster version of Merrell’s classic Moab. It leans towards a trail-running feel, which keeps it agile underfoot, but still has the grip and protection needed for longer routes.

6. Hoka Transport Hike w. Gore Tex, £170

Softer and more relaxed than most, but still considered. This one sits slightly higher on the ankle, adding support without feeling heavy. Built with a Vibram sole and a waterproof lining, it’s an easy option for long, steady days where comfort comes first.
